Dr. Subramanian is on leave from prestigious Indian School of Business, a top business school in India and the only Indian institution to be ranked in the world’s top 100 for path-breaking research, where he is a Professor of Finance. He has previously served on several expert committees including the P J Nayak Committee on governance of banks for the Reserve Bank of India and the Uday Kotak Corporate Governance Committee of Securities and Exchange Board of India. He was also the Founding Board Member at Bandhan Bank (2015-2018). Because of his work in shaping the Indian banking sector and other path-breaking research with a significant societal impact, Subramanian was named ISB’s inaugural Alumni Endowment Research Fellow in 2014.
His research in banking, law and finance, innovation and economic growth, and corporate governance has been published in the world’s leading journals, including The Review of Financial Studies, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, and the Journal of Law and Economics. Before beginning his academic career, Subramanian worked as a consultant with JPMorgan Chase in New York. He also served in a management role in the elite derivatives research group at ICICI Ltd., which at the time was India’s top project financing institution and one of the most sought-after recruiters in top Indian business schools.
Even while still earning his MBA and PhD, he produced award-winning work. Subramanian’s PhD dissertation earned the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation Dissertation Fellowship, which recognizes the top 15 PhD dissertations across all disciplines every year. While earning his MBA at the Indian Institute of Management in Calcutta, he was named to the Honour Roll of the Institute for being a top ranker in the batch and was awarded the Institute’s coveted medal for the most balanced outlook to business problems. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, one of India’s leading engineering schools.
In previous academic roles, Subramanian served on the finance faculty at Goizueta Business School at Emory University in the United States. He obtained his MBA and PhD in Financial Economics at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business under the advice of Professor Luigi Zingales and Professor Raghuram Rajan. His own students have gone on to become faculty at the world’s top institutions such as London School of Economics, Indian School of Business and University of Houston
after completing PhD at the world’s top PhD programs, including Chicago Booth, MIT Sloan, Kellogg, Berkeley, London Business School, Duke and Emory universities.

Sanjiv has been with Unilever for 28 years and for the last 18 years he has led businesses in different parts of the world. He has been Chairman and Managing Director of Unilever Bangladesh Limited (2002 – 2006), Chairman and CEO of Unilever Philippines Inc. (2007 – 2008), Chairman of Unilever – North Africa and Middle East (2008 – 2013) and from October 2013 he assumed his responsibilities of heading Unilever’s business in India and South Asia.
During his seven years at Hindustan Unilever, the market capitalization of the Company has increased from $17 billion to $70 billion making HUL the fourth most valuable company in the country. In this period, HUL has won several awards and recognitions including the prestigious Economic Times ‘Company of the Year’ & ‘Corporate Citizen of the Year’ awards and Business Standard’s ‘Company of the year’ award. Forbes has rated HUL as the most innovative company in India and the 8th most innovative company in the world. Aon Hewitt in a global study rated HUL as the 3rd best company globally for building leaders.
Sanjiv is a Director on the Board of Indian School of Business, Vice President of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, member of the Breach Candy Hospital Trust and South Asia Advisory Board of Harvard Business School. He chairs Xynteo’s ‘India 2022’ a coalition of top Indian and MNC companies and Co-chairs the Advisory Network to the High-Level Panel for a ‘Sustainable Ocean Economy’.

An industry veteran with over 3 decades of rich experience in wholesale, retail, general management and marketing; Mr. Mediratta has worked with some of the leading Fortune 500 corporations such as Walmart, Procter & Gamble, Whirlpool and Yum! Brands.
In his current role since 2016, Mr. Mediratta has been instrumental in steering METRO into newer geographies and building a robust culture of customer-centricity within the organization. Within two years under his leadership, METRO has added several new outlets to its portfolio of 28 wholesale stores currently operational in India.
Prior to heading the METRO Cash and Carry India, Mr. Mediratta was with Walmart US spear-heading multi-billion dollar businesses for the entire US market, first as Global Officer and Vice-President for Operations (Texas) and then as Global Officer and VP Merchandising for Fresh. Before taking up this global leadership assignment, Mr. Mediratta was the driving force behind successfully setting up Walmart’s Cash and Carry business in India and establishing 20 wholesale outlets in a record five years’ time till 2013. He has been recognized globally by Walmart US for being instrumental in scripting the success story of Walmart’s Cash and Carry business in India.
Before his decade long stint at Walmart, Mr. Mediratta worked with Yum! Brand as the Chief Marketing Officer for South Asia for Pizza Hut, KFC, Tacobell and A&W in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Mauritius. He was instrumental in relaunching the brand KFC successfully in India. Prior to this, he was the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) at Whirlpool India and Marico India respectively. Mr. Mediratta started his career with Procter & Gamble (P&G) driving the successful brand launch of ‘Ariel’ detergent in 1991. In his decade long tenure at P&G, he worked in various challenging marketing and brand roles in India, Singapore and Bangkok.
Mr. Mediratta was rated amongst ‘25 Hottest Young Executives in India’ by Business Today in 2006; ‘Top 8 Marketers in India’ by The Economic Times in 2003; ‘50 most Powerful People in Media, Advertising and Marketing in India’ by PITCH in 2004. Mr. Mediratta is the Chair- FICCI Committee on Retail and Internal Trade in 2020 and Co-Chair of Food Processing Committee, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
Mr. Mediratta is a B. Tech graduate from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He did his MBA from IIM- Calcutta and was part of the ‘Roll of Honour’ of the institute. Prior to his India role, Madhusudan was leading the P&G business in Indonesia where he has led strong sales growth, share turn around, strong value creation and cash productivity. As a passionate advocate of diversity, he spearheaded the development of local talent in Indonesia and under his leadership, the company recently achieved the milestone of having more than 50% women managers in the workforce. Madhusudan also served as the Chairman of Indonesia Chapter of US ASEAN Business Council and advised the Indonesian government on policy matters.
Madhusudan started his career with P&G in India 1999 as a new hire in the Sales function from Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta and worked in various locations across India including being part of P&G’s first Modern Retail team in India. His first international assignment was to P&G’s headquarters in the United States, where he worked with the P&G-Walmart business team. He returned to India as the Head – Market, Strategy & Planning and oversaw the rapid growth of P&G’s business that grew 10 times
in the space of a decade. He then moved to Indonesia as Head of Sales where he learnt to speak the local language, Bahasa Indonesia. Madhusudan later assumed the position of ASEAN Commercial Leader based in Bangkok, where he oversaw the commercial category teams across all P&G ASEAN countries and helped set up P&G’s e-commerce business teams in the region. Post this assignment, he returned to Indonesia as the Head of the P&G business before taking over as India CEO.
